Spain is the leading and reference country in organ transplants

Spain is the leading and reference country in organ transplants, of which more than 30% are performed on children.

In 2021, 323 Living Donor Renal Transplants were performed in Spain.

While the impact of the pandemic continues, Spain also led the world in number of donations, the donation rate achieved in Spain, 40.2 p.m.p., far exceeds that reported by the rest of the countries in the world in 2020 to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation, which is managed by the National Transplant Organization as a Collaborating Center of the World Health Organization.

According to the latest data published by the National Transplant Organization, a total of 2,950 kidney transplants were performed in Spain in 2021, 11% of which were from living donors. *(1)

Kidney transplantation is a surgical treatment in which a healthy kidney is implanted in a patient with chronic kidney disease. The goal of transplantation is to restore kidney function to avoid dialysis.

The kidney comes from a healthy person who voluntarily gives the organ to a loved one. Blood family members are more likely to be compatible living kidney donors.

Living donor kidney transplantation offers a great advantage: the waiting time is shortened and it can be performed under ideal conditions for the patient.

Both you and the living kidney donor will be evaluated to determine if the donor organ is a match for you. The blood type and tissue type must be compatible with those of the donor. But even if the donor kidney is not a match, in some cases a successful transplant is possible with additional medical treatment before and after the transplant to desensitize your immune system and reduce the risk of immune rejection.

Once you have a compatible living kidney donor, the kidney transplant procedure will be scheduled in advance. Donor surgery (donor nephrectomy) and transplantation are performed on the same day.

The risks of a living donor kidney transplant are similar to those of a deceased donor transplant. These include the risks associated with surgery, organ rejection and the possible side effects of anti-rejection medications.
